The course looks into the evolution of the Hollywood studio system (1930-1950) and the historical, social and financial causes for Hollywood’s worldwide empire. The main focus is on film genres, highlighting the evolution, the characteristics, the conventions of the first film genres (screwball comedy, musical, western, melodrama, horror) and the film theories developed to address them. The course also focuses on the main representatives of French Poetic Realism, Italian Neo-Realism and Japanese cinema. Students are also introduced to technological developments and to the affects of television’s growth on film.
