The Cinematic Bats are the self-organized film club of the Film School of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.). It mainly consists of students from the department and aims to bring people to remote Stavroupoli and give life to the tobacco warehouse where our department is housed.
This film club was born in the early years of our department and was revived during the academic year of 2022-2023 through the initiative of the members of the Panorama Film School of the A.U.Th. Our group is not exclusively composed of department students. We are an open group that accepts new members throughout the year, regardless of university department, age, etc.
Additionally, the Bats participate in the self-organized Film Groups Festival A.U.Th.-UoM (UniCineFest), held every May in the university halls, featuring the majority of university film groups in the city, as well as in the Anti-fascist Basketball Tournament of the Open Assembly of the “Western Districts” (we do joint screenings, not sports events/we are not the sporty type yet).
Our goal, like every student film group, is to transform our universities into makeshift and interactive cinemas. Our intention is to promote socialization, reflection, and discussion about and through cinema (and to watch films together as friends!).
The Bats try to organize at least one screening per month (sometimes we don’t make it, but during university occupations, we go all out), usually on the first Tuesday of the month, late at night, at our magical tobacco warehouse at Ikoniou 1.
