The course focuses on world cinema from 1960 until today. Topics that are analysed include: the French New Wave and its affect on American and international cinema, the British Free Cinema and Kitchen Sink Cinema, the New Hollywood and its main representatives, the New German Cinema (Fassbinder, Herzog, Wenders), the evolution of the main film genres, the American Independent Cinema and the new digital technologies. Classes also highlight changes in technology, the evolution and affects of video and DVD on the film idustry and contemporary methods of production and distribution. At the end of the course, students will be able to recognise and analyse the characteristics of the main film movements that evolved between 1960 and 2000, explain how different sociopolitical contexts have affected cinema and evaluate the influences of film movements and/or genres on contemporary films.
