This course engages with the relation between history and the cinema, the formation of the cinematic medium and the technological, social and economic conditions that led to the first film screening. We study the pioneers of the cinema, the key movements in the silent era as well as the impact of historical, socioeconomic and political developments in the production and distribution of the motion pictures. By the end of the semester, the students should be able to identify and analyze the key features of the cinema in the period 1895-1930 and to relate them to the wider social and historical environment that nurtured them.
